Stopping The Violence
September 15 Symposium
| On
September 15, 2006, Minister Ida Chong hosted a symposium on
Community Action for Women’s Safety. More than 80 participants
from across B.C came together to discuss their work in
prevention of violence against women and to identify best practices
in the field.
The
symposium was an opportunity for grant recipients and other
interested parties to hear the outcomes from some of the projects
from the $1 million Community Action for Women’s Safety grants
announced March 8, 2006 by Minister Chong. |

The
grants funded projects in more than 70 B.C. communities, with good
regional representation and a broad mix of projects, from education
and awareness, to encouraging mentorship of aboriginal youth by
elders.
Some of these projects will be highlighted on this website in the
spring of 2007.
The
overwhelming consensus was that the day provided a valuable
opportunity for symposium participants to share lessons learned,
ideas and information with Minister Chong, ministry officials and
with each other.
The
lessons learned from the various projects and from the symposium
dialogue are being compiled into a community planning guide. The
planning guide will be distributed to stakeholders and posted on this
website in the spring to ensure everyone benefits from the
Community Action for Women’s Safety grants.
