Starting Your Business: A Guide to Resources for BC Women

Message from the Minister of Small Business and Economic Development and the Minister of State for Women’s and Seniors’ Services - October 2004

We are pleased to present Starting Your Business – A Guide to Resources for BC Women, part of our government’s commitment to promoting and profiling women in B.C.’s economy.

Small business helps to drive our economy, and women own and operate about 36 per cent of small businesses – the highest proportion in Canada.

This guide will help even more women realize their dream of owning and operating a small business. Women thinking about starting a business may have questions about balancing the demands of business with family responsibilities, whether they should work from home, or how to build a support network. They may be starting up a business after years of being away from the workforce to raise kids.

They may be seniors who are looking at starting up a business to supplement their retirement income, based on something that has been a passion for many years. They may be applying for financing for the first time because assets have been in their partner’s name. This guide provides an overview of all of those areas, under one cover. While a number of resources exist on the topic of small business on the Internet, wading through them all can be confusing and discouraging.

This guide provides an overview and “hands-on” advice for B.C. women, as well as profiles of successful business owners that will inspire women to pursue their goals. When women in business succeed, we all benefit from a stronger, more diverse economy.

The provincial government appreciates the participation of Western Economic Diversification, Small Business BC and especially Women’s Enterprise Centre for their contributions.
