Board of Examiners

The Board of Examiners was established under the Local Government Act to oversee the certification of senior local government officials by establishing qualifications and standards for local government employment according to offices and grades, granting certificates according to grades and skills to persons possessing the qualifications and meeting the standards, setting and holding examinations for candidates for a certificate, or cancelling certificates. The three member board is appointed by order-in-council and includes one member nominated by each of the following: the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, the Local Government Management Association of BC, and the Minister of Community and Rural Development.

Islands Trust Fund Board

The Islands Trust Fund was established to preserve and protect the trust area, consisting of islands located in the Georgia Strait and Howe Sound. The trust is responsible for the preparation of the trust policy statement, official community plans and zoning bylaws respecting land within the trust not covered by an official community plan bylaw. The Board's mandate is to preserve and protect significant areas and features of the trust environment by administering the trust fund, managing the property of the trust fund and meeting legislative requirements to prepare a trust fund plan and file annual reports. The Board consists of up to six members appointed by Minister's Order. Members are nominated by the Islands Trust Executive Committee, the Trust Council, and the Minister of Community and Rural Development.

Atlin Advisory Planning Commission (Dease Lake Advisory Planning Commission dissolved)

The function of the Atlin Advisory Planning Commission is to advise the Minister on planning and land use matters within the Atlin community (an unincorporated community that is not part of a regional district) and to act on behalf of the community in communication with provincial agencies.

The Commission also provides a broader forum for public discussion on other issues and participate in activities such as large-scale resource planning for the Atlin-Taku region and major project reviews.

The Atlin Advisory Planning Commission and the Atlin Improvement District were amalgamated (effective date Jan. 1, 2009) to create the Atlin Community Improvement District. Seven trustees will be elected to provide local servicing and advice on planning and land use matters.

The Ministry will continue to be involved with changes in planning regulations for the Atlin Community Planning Area, which is now the new boundary of the Atlin Community Improvement District.

Effective December 1, 2007, the boundaries of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine were extended to include the Dease Lake community.

The Dease Lake Advisory Planning Commission was formally dissolved on December 1, 2008 and the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine has passed a bylaw establishing a Joint Community Advisory Committee and Advisory Planning Commission to advise the regional board of concerns in community services within the unincorporated area of Dease Lake.

Northern Development Initiative Trust

The Northern Development Initiative Trust (Northern Development) was established in October 2004 through an act of legislation passed by the government of British Columbia. It is a regionally operated economic development funding corporation for central and northern British Columbia. Its mandate is to be a catalyst for strategic economic development at the local and regional levels to achieve its mission of helping northern B.C. communities create and sustain world-class industries and diversified economies. The Trust covers approximately 70 percent of the Province, which includes communities from the south at Lytton to the north at Fort Nelson, and from the east at Valemount to the west at the Queen Charlotte Islands.

North Island-Coast Development Initiative Trust

Now known as the Island Coastal Economic Trust, this initiative was created by the government of B.C. on Feb. 27, 2006 under Bill 7, to help grow and diversify the economy of the North Island-Coast area by leveraging new investment and partnerships for economic opportunities. The Trust provides funding to create new and sustainable regional economic growth through strategic investments in targeted “sectors” with the north Island, coastal and Sunshine Coast regional economy.

Southern Interior Development Initiative

The mission of the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust is to support regionally strategic investments in economic development projects that will have long-lasting and measurable regional benefits for the Southern Interior. The Trust's objective is to help grow and diversify the economy of the area through economic development initiatives in 10 key sectors. Governance of the Trust is the responsibility of a 13 member board of directors.

Columbia Basin Trust

The Columbia Basin Trust is a Crown corporation created by the Columbia Basin Trust Act to benefit the region most adversely affected by the Columbia River Treaty. The Trust promotes social, economic and environmental well being in the Basin by delivering benefits to residents through a variety of programs. In the last fiscal year, these direct funding benefits totalled more than $6 million.

Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society is a grant-making agency that assists the people of Northwest British Columbia, and in particular the Nechako region and Kitamaat Village, by sponsoring sustainable economic and social projects in the area most affected by the Kemano project and the creation of the Nechako Reservoir.
