Re: Towns for Tomorrow Program: 2009 Application Intake
Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Towns for Tomorrow Program. The Towns for Tomorrow Program was
developed to address the unique challenges faced by smaller communities in British Columbia with respect to
sustainability and meeting their infrastructure needs.
Originally a three-year, $21-million program for communities with populations up to 5,000, Towns for Tomorrow
was recently expanded with an additional $50 million being allocated to the Program to accommodate municipalities
with populations of 15,000 or less and regional districts.
Now a five year, $71-million Program, Towns for Tomorrow provides funding for infrastructure projects that
address climate change and contribute to the overall health, sustainability and liveability of communities.
Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:
- Water Projects;
- Wastewater Projects;
- Public Transit Projects;
- Environmental Energy Improvement Projects;
- Local Road Projects;
- Cultural Projects;
- Recreation Projects;
- Tourism Projects; and,
- Other Projects, including protective and emergency services infrastructure and community development.
The Program provides up to 80 percent of the funding for approved projects. Under the revised Program structure,
communities with populations under 5,000 will continue to cost-share with the Province on an 80/20 basis, with
a maximum provincial contribution of $400,000. Communities with populations between 5,000 and 15,000 will share
on a 75/25 basis, with a maximum provincial contribution of $375,000.
Detailed Program information, including the 2009 Program Guide and Application package, is available on the Towns
for Tomorrow website at: www.townsfortomorrow.gov.bc.ca.
All available Towns for Tomorrow Program funding for the 2008 intake has now been fully committed. Applications
submitted under the 2008 Program will remain active if a new Application Form and updated supporting documentation
is submitted to the Ministry of Community Development. New applications are also welcome at this time. Before
completing the Application Form, please be sure to read the 2009 Program Guide.
To be considered for the next round of approvals all Application Forms and supporting documentation must be
received at the Ministry by January 16, 2009. Please note that all local governments, including regional
districts, may only submit one application per submission deadline. The next round of successful projects
will be announced in spring 2009.
Thank You.
