Transitional Assistance Program

Choosing a resignation / retirement date

If you have been approved for Transitional Assistance Program funding, you will need to choose a resignation/retirement date. This is necessary to fulfill your eligibility requirements and allow us to send you payment.

You may no longer be employed by your current employer after the resignation/retirement date you choose. Nor may you work for an affiliated company or at the same works site.

For most applicants, your resignation/retirement date must be on or before October 31, 2009.

The only exceptions are for applicants who turn 60 between November 1 and December 31, 2009. Because a retirement date prior to their 60th birthday might result in financial penalties for these applicants, they may instead choose a resignation/retirement date of on or before December 31, 2009.

Please note that your resignation/retirement date is not the same as your lay-off date.

You must enter your resignation/retirement date on your Declaration, Employer and Employee Resignation/ Retirement Agreement and Direction to Pay forms.

In choosing your resignation/retirement date, please keep the following points in mind:
  • Successful applicants must stop receiving any Employment Insurance (EI) benefits as of their resignation/retirement date. Please be aware that we provide resignation/retirement date information to Service Canada.
  •  If you are on lay-off, it is important to not provide your lay-off date as your resignation/retirement date, as this will affect any Employment Insurance benefits you may have received.

Please be aware that the resignation/retirement date you choose may affect your personal finances in unexpected ways. We strongly encourage all applicants to seek professional financial advice if you are unsure about the tax and other financial implications of your choice of resignation/retirement date. Program staff are not able (or qualified) to provide you with this type of advice.
