General Questions
Q. Why was the
Community Development Trust created?
A. The Community
Development Trust has been established to create
opportunities for forest workers, their families and
their communities. The three Community Development
Trust programs are designed to help forest workers
deal with the difficult market conditions currently
affecting the forest sector.
Q. Why are the
programs limited to forest sector workers?
A. Community Development
Trust programs target assistance to workers and
communities that depend on the forest sector because
this is a key sector that has been affected by
unusually difficult market conditions. We are
confident that the forest sector will return to
strength and continue to play a key part in British Columbia’s
economy. The Trust is helping workers and
communities get through the current market situation
in a strong position for future growth and
prosperity.
Q. How much funding is
available for each of the Community Development
Trust programs?
A. Total funding is $129
million over three years. Of this, $85.5 million
goes to the Transitional Assistance program, $26.25
million to the Job Opportunities program, and $17.25
million to the Tuition Assistance program.
Q. For how long will
the Community Development Trust programs be
available?
A. Funding for the
Trust is over three years, from Spring 2008 through
to March 31, 2011. The Transitional Assistance
program is scheduled to use all of its funding in
the first two years, while the Tuition Assistance
and Job Opportunities programs will be providing
funding through all three years.
Q. Why do the
Community Development Trust programs have separate
application rules and forms?
A. The three
Community Development Trust programs are aimed at
helping different groups, so each has its own rules
and forms.
Q. How were
Community Development Trust program rules developed?
A. A working group
of industry and union representatives worked with
the B.C. government to develop the basic rules of
all Community Development Trust programs. See the
Industry Working Group page for more
information.
Q. Why are some
Community Development Trust programs accepting
applications continuously while others only accept
applications at certain times?
A. The Transitional
Assistance program accepts applications only during
specific application periods in order to make sure
available funding is targeted to those who need it
most. The Tuition Assistance program is able to
accept applications continuously. The Job
Opportunities Program has received sufficient
applications to meet program targets for 2009/10. As
a result, applications will close on July 24, 2009.
